Jul 13th, 2009 by Ken
China Virtual Three Gorges Island(or called SL China Three Gorges) is a part of Handong Zhu’s artwork “The Three Gorges of the Future”(See below for Intro). The aim is to build a virtual area under the route of the three gorges dam in the Second life. which is composed by several major places including Chongqing, Fongdu, Zhongxian,Fengjie, Wushang and Zigui. The materials of building such area are originated from the photographs, footages and sounds collected by the working group obtained from the local eco environment, cultures and natural sceneries. There will be filming in each place following the route of water that forms a ten-minute-long video of each location.

Introduction to The Three Gorges of the Future
This project will be a combination of Internet, images and interactive devices between the virtual world and the realistic spaces. The project is based on the architectures, cultural objects and natural sceneries, which are drowned by the route of the dam. The initial working stage of the realization is primarily about the colleting and research of footages, sounds, pictures and objects by means of field investigations. The style of the realization is the online interaction between real time images from both locations so that viewers are able to experience the virtual world of the project through the interactive devices. This allows the citizens in Linz to feel the present or future influences on the earth, (aboriginal) residents, and the shifts of cultures, ethnic groups and values caused by the ecological changes in the region the Three Gorges in China.
The process of creation:
1. To build a virtual area under the route of the three gorges dam in the Second life. which is composed by several major places including Chongqing, Fongdu, Zhongxian, Fengjie, Wushang and Zigui. The materials of building such area are originated from the photographs, footages and sounds collected by the working group obtained from the local eco environment, cultures and natural sceneries. There will be filming in each place following the route of water that forms a ten-minute-long video of each location.
2. Exchanging interactions: The present participants can view and interact with the screens, which locate in the main square of Linz through the preinstalled censoring devices. They can also exchange ideas with citizens reside in the region of the big dam: six residents from the six different locations will be invited to answer online questions and interviews from the virtual city (Linz). Those residents will float in a balloon on the water surface of the Three Gorges Dam and connect by laptops. The computers installed in the 80+1 base camp will realize interactions of people and they can discuss about the issues of changes brought by the ecology, energy and globalizations.
