In it’s 6th year, Burning Life is the Second Life event complementary to the real-life Burning Man Project that wrapped up on the 5th September. It’s one of the best opportunities to view the enormous variety that Second Life engenders, so do spend some in-world time checking it out.
All the details are on the Linden [...]

Second Life Herald: Princess of Yaximixche Opens Palace in Google's Lively

by Idoru Wellman, Inter-world Royal Cultural Affairs desk

Reading between the lines of the latest press release from The Royal Press Office at Gukumatz Palace, Her Royal Highness The Princess of Yaximixche may still be suffering from hardware issues that prevent her from visiting her loyal subjects in SL.

However, all is not lost, as we learn that after a recent visit to the new Virtual World of Lively, Her Royal Highness asked to her Private Secretary the creation of a new royal residence. Builders immediately started with the design of Gukumatz Palace following the requirements of HRH Princess Manqo.

While the Princess may not always be present in Gukumatz palace, visitors can admire the lavish chinese and brown drawings room decorated with local plants and ornaments - decorations the Royal Press Office tells us where chosen in order to maintain a low ecological footprint in this building. Gukumatz Palace also has a new art gallery with a multimedia display about the Amazon Rainforest deforestation and its effects on climate change.

The Lively population seems to have been charmed by the Princess - the press office tell us the "Five Trees" plaiting in the palace is a fabulous artwork kindly donated by local residents and it is center piece to one of the rooms.

The Princess was deeply touched by the warm welcome of Lively citizens who were also concerned about climate change. HRH Princess Manqo discussed with some visitors to Gukumatz Palace about the recent nature disasters in different points of our planet. The Princess of Yaximixche was also greatly surprised that many of the Lively citizens are Second Live citizens.

Gukumatz Palace is open 24x7 here

Second Life Herald: Ballet Pixelle Special Performance Sunday Morning: Solary and “Shuzenji”

by Idoru Wellman, Arts and Entertainment desk

The Second Life Ballet Company - now renamed Ballet Pixelle - presents renowned Japanese singer/songwriter, Solary Clary (Sora Izumikawa in RL) singing to accompany her orchestral score at the Sunday, September 28, 2008 performance of Ballet Pixelle’s current production “Shuzenji”. Curtain time is 7 a.m. SLT. This promises to be the cultural event of the weekend - although the timing may pose challenges for the North American audience. The SL players in Asia and Europe however should be pleased - the performance of “Shuzenji” is scheduled for evening attendance by audience members in Asia and afternoon in Europe.

According to Inarra Saarinen, the Company’s founder and artistic director, “one of the joys of dancing in a digital world that literally spans the globe is that everyone can come to the ballet. The problem is, of course, when it is evening in Second Life official time, Asia is just waking up and Europe is going to bed. We have dedicated fans who come to see us perform no matter what the time is where they live, but Ballet Pixelle does shift our schedule sometimes so they don’t have to shift theirs all the time.”

Ballet Pixelle says “Shuzeni” is their most complex ballet to date. The story is set in the Edo era of 18th century Japan with two lovers, Sakura and Tokai separated from each other when Tokai is murdered at the shrine of Shuzenji by jealous Oirans, or courtesans. However, the faithful Sakura continues to search for Tokai at the shrine, and because of her enduring love, Tokai’s spirit is freed. In the third act, with soaring, ringing music that raises the spirits Solary Clary’s lyrics promise, “I have no regrets. My life with you is forever hand in hand. Let us dance with this music forever.”

See what promises to be a moving and beautiful ballet at a time when the peak user concurrency should have limited impact on a special live singing performance Sunday, September 28, 2008 at 7 a.m. SLT -- Ballet Pixelle Theater, IBM 10 (12, 191,210)

Regular performances are Sundays at 5 p.m. SLT (USA Pacific time)
Second Life Blog: Visit Burning Life, today through Oct. 5

For years, Philip Linden has talked about the annual Burning Man Festival and the ways its open-ended nature, participant-created content and art contributed to his vision of what Second Life could be.

For those who aren’t familiar with the event, Burning Man is an annual week-long art, fire and community celebration in the Black Rock Desert – a 400 square mile expanse of barren landscape in Northern Nevada – focused on community values like immediacy and participation. Attendees are invited to be whoever they are, express themselves however they want without fear of judgment or social criticism. It’s a place controlled only by the limits of the imagination – a place where 50,000 individuals come together to form a peaceful, respectful community where all ideas have merit and everyone is invited to create, share, explore, learn and grow.

Sound vaguely familiar? It should. Many of the same principles that guide Burning Man form the core foundations of the Second Life community.

With the histories of Second Life and Burning Man so closely intertwined, it should come as no surprise that a virtual rendition of the event exists – and will be celebrating its 6th anniversary starting today. Burning Life, as it’s called inworld, has now grown into one of the larger, annual Second Life events. This year’s Burning Life – which runs until October 5 – will feature art and live performances, interactive theme camps, a fashion show and of course, the burning of the Man amid a fireworks display.

To help commemorate Burning Life’s anniversary, Burning Man founder Larry Harvey and Philip will be participating in a panel discussion on Tuesday, Sept. 30. They’ll be chatting about their experiences, inspirations, reflection, future goals and the roles that both Burning Man and Second Life play in enhancing the human condition.

For more information on the discussion or on the event in general, including schedules and to find out how you can contribute and participate visit the official Burning Life Web site.

When: Burning Life opens Saturday at 9 a.m. pacific time and runs to October 5th.

Center Camp stage kicks off at 11 a.m. pacific. See the performance schedule here.

Where: Burning Life
Infoisland: Info Island and libraries in second life this week

Grand Opening of Bradburyville

Alliance Library System, a pioneer in the use of virtual worlds to promote librarianship and reading, will unveil a unique “walk-in” book during the grand opening of their newest Second Life project, Bradburyville. The Grand Opening is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 5th from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. SL time, and is part of The Big Read Initiative sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. It is open to the public.

Alliance developed the walk-in book concept as a way to further immerse visitors into the novel Fahrenheit 451, the seminal work by writer Ray Bradbury. Visitors will dress as the books protagonist, literally walk through the cover of a large copy of Fahrenheit 451, then watch and interact as scenes from the book appear around them. Narrations describes the action and themes of the story as the scenes change and evolve. Participants are left with a question to ponder regarding what book they most value or would choose to protect.

In addition to experiencing Fahrenheit 451, additional events and activities will be available during the grand opening. The schedule is:

4 p.m. – 6 p.m. – Guided Tours available of Bradbury ville, with time to experience the walk-in book and other areas of the island

6 p.m. – 7 p.m. – Professor Logsdon of Eureka College will give a lecture entitled “Bradbury the Man”

7 p.m. Music and Social Time; Additional tours available

All events are open to the public. Those unable to attend the Grand Opening are invited to visit Bradburyville on their own, or to take part in additional guided tours available in coming weeks. A full schedule of tours may be found at the Bradburyville welcome area.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Bradburyville/129/127/24
In addition to Fahrenheit 451, other Bradbury novels featured on the island include Dandelion Wine, the Martian Chronicles, and Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Book Discussions in Bradburyville

Monday, Sept. 29th at 6 p.m. SLT on Bradburyville: A discussion of the dystopian novel, Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury. In this futuristic world, people have wall-sized TVs, listen to music and voices via earbuds, don’t read books much anymore, and live in fear of some vague, imminent war. Sound familiar? Contact Maxito Ricardo for more info.

Tuesday, Sept. 30th at 6 p.m. SLT on Bradburyville: A discussion of the novel, Dandelion Wine, by Ray Bradbury. It’s the summer of 1928 in Green Town, modeled after Waukegan, Illinois. 12-year-old Douglas Spalding has all types of adventures and encounters that enlighten him about the exhilaration of being fully alive, the value of memory, and the realities of departure and death. Contact Maxito Ricardo for more information.

Smart Investing: Planning Decade by Decade

What should I do throughout the years to be ready for retirement? What should I do when I am in my 40’s? How about my 50’s? 60’s? CPA Paul Santos will present a workshop on Investing InfoIsland on Tuesday September 30 at 7 pm sl.

Real Worlds, Virtual Libraries at SLA
On Oct. 3, Lori Bell, Director of Innovation, Alliance Library System,
and Rhonda Trueman, Reference Librarian, Johnson and Wales University,
will discuss their book “Real Worlds, Virtual Libraries: Librarians
and in Second Life and Other Multi-User Virtual Environments” in
Second Life at the SLA area. The book is set to be released in
October.

Book description:

Eighty percent of Internet users are expected to engage in some form
of virtual world activity by 2011 (Gartner Research Group), and
librarians and educators are already there. This fascinating book the
brainchild of two pioneering virtual world librarians is designed to
help libraries and schools recognize the importance of multi-user
virtual environments (MUVEs) and consider ways of getting involved as
they proliferate. The editors and 24 contributors describe library,
educational, and cultural projects they have undertaken. They recount
their experiences working together to succeed in Second Life and other
virtual worlds and explain how traditional library services such as
reference, teaching, collections, discussion groups, and young adult
programs can be applied in a virtual environment.

Come and hear Lori (avatar: Lorelei Junot) and Rhonda (avatar:Abbey
Zenith) discuss the book and how they see libraries intersecting with
virtual worlds. No reservations are required! The event will be held
at 5 p.m. Second Life Time (8 p.m. ET, 5 p.m. PT) at SLA’s land in
Second Life. In order to participate, you will need to have the
Second Life software running on your PC and already have an account
(avatar) with Second Life (free). Being able to hear voice chat in
Second Life would be a benefit.

Second Life Herald: Amaliscious Destiny -- Post 6 Grrrl

[It is hard to keep pace with Amaliscious. She's my landlady, she runs Dollz Magazine and Dollz Modeling Agency - two institutions I love to work for - she's my high fashion shopping companion and most of all the most warm-hearted person I have met in SL so far. Her quick changing of plans and ideas makes it hard to keep any schedule and drives me totally nuts but I wouldn't want her to be any other way. She is unique in her personality and in her avi – yes, this girl has hips; she's bootyliscious.

Wow what to write...

I came into SL and was immediately amazed and in awe of the whole concept of a "virtual world". Being an avid The Sims fan, I thought this was just the hottest thing since nightclubs.

I remember purchasing my first 512. It was a small plot on Promissa on protected Linden waters. Once I discovered prims, that tiny 512 quickly grew to 5 more plots, which still weren't enough for me. Yes, I am a prim hog and very much into details. I can't stand those fake paper cutout objects. Anyhow someone told me that I could rent private property with double prims. I soon found Olive Grove, which was my home for a long while. I adored that sim, and met some wonderful people there. One of which became my SL business partner. He offered me an amazing opportunity and I knew I would never have the chance again so I grabbed it and held on for dear life!

I bought my own Class 5 region with 15,000 prims to use; I have to say I was in prim heaven!!! Soon New England was born and that began my entrepreneurship if you will. I purchased my sim around the time Linden had slashed prices and everyone was jumping on the land wagon. New England was like a sinking ship. I couldn't get any renters and knew I had to think of something fast if I wanted to stay a float.

I had already established Dollz Cabaret (a Burlesque style theater) and it was taking off nicely. I thought that's it! Make a town centered on the Dollz and it all just kind of came together from there. In one day, I tore down everything there was of New England. I had a friend terraform the island to look like a heart and went out and bought builds from Barnesworth Anubis, one of my fav designers in SL.

The next day around 5 am SLT, I sat at my computer, coffee in hand and began creating Dollz Town. The Cabaret was built from scratch and given a HUGE makeover and sits on one end of the park. At the other is Dollz Magazine, a magazine dedicated to Burlesque/Pinup with a monthly photo contest. There is also Dollz Photography Studio and Dollz Modeling Agency. Shops are in the center with homes around the outskirts of town.

I drew inspiration from my fav sim besides my own, Tableau. I wanted something with a retro Parisian feel. It took me 2 days nonstop and finally it was finished. Finally my vision had become a reality and within the first week all of the shops were full. I am proud to say Dollz Town is now thriving and so far I have heard great reviews. I have not reached the limits of my imagination so far. Dolly Trailer Park has been my latest project and who knows what else is yet to come.

I came into SL as myself and that is who I remain. I don't role play, I'm not into the whole pose ball sex thing. I don't buy the whole SL and RL are separate, to me that's hogwash! I am crazy, chaotic, charming, passionate, creative, funny, and a visionary. It is hard to keep up with my direction at times, as I tend to run with the ideas when they come to mind. I have made some dear friends here and lost some as well. I am now completely on my own and while it is a great challenge; I wouldn't change a minute of it.

This is me, love me or hate me.

As we mentioned yesterday, the level of detail in metrics supplied by Linden Lab has declined significantly. The last time we were able to report actual numbers of active Australian Second Life users, there’s been a bounce back to a little over twelve thousand.
There’s no longer a country breakdown for active avatars. Instead, there’s [...]

Reuters-Second Life: Blog: Registered for Facebook under your avatar name? That’s a ban.

Many Second Life users cherish their avatar identity so highly they sign up for other online networks, like LinkedIn or Twitter, under their avatar name. But Second Life enthusiasts who register for Facebook under their avatar name should watch out: the Syndey Morning Herald is reporting Facebook is terminating accounts it suspects don’t represent real-life names.

The SMH follows the story of Sydneysider Elmo Keep, who got banned from the site with no warning when Facebook officials suspected her name (which is real) was fake. Only by supplying copies of government-issued identity documents to Facebook was she able to get her account restored.

Valleywag has video of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg laying down the law. “You can’t be on Facebook without being yourself,” Sandberg says. “We kick you off.”

How many Facebook users are registered under their Second Life name, and could be banned at any moment under the policy? It’s impossible to tell, but even a casual search reveals that there could be more than a handful.

Second Life Herald: Will SexBed Dispute Lead to Nuclear Conflict?

Angry furs plot revenge - Stroker Serpentine ejects all users from SexGen Users Group - a Serpentine alliance with fur leader Nexxus Ambassador?

by Pixeleen Mistral, National Affairs desk

“Stop freaking out like rats on acid and actually find out what can be done to HELP corsi” - Almira Leopold

Harsh words were barked, squeaked, meowed, and yowelled in furry community chat Monday, as angry supporters of Corsi Mousehold suggested taking the trademark battle for SexGen Sexbeds to Stroker Serpentine -- with suggestions of a nuclear showdown and organized abuse reports as possible avenues to defend Ms. Mousehold. While calmer heads in the anthropomorphic animal community suggested planning raids in group chat was not wise, the possibility remains that angry furs, or agent provocateurs pretending to be furs may detonate sim-crashing nukes in Mr. Serpentine's sim to retaliate for allegedly orchestrating a suspension of Ms. Mousehold over the weekend and assorted trademark enforcement actions.

While many will deplore resorting to sim crashing and mass abuse reports as retaliation, the fur community has an understandable concern for the stability of the flow of L$ spacebux from Ms. Mousehold’s SexGen store in Gar -- anything that might hurt business at the store could limit funding for tier payments in the Furnation sims. At least that is what appears to be is going on based on a chatlog relayed to the Herald offices late monday evening [chatlog after the jump].

Tension were high over the weekend and increased further as the news that Stroker had ejected all customers from the SexGen Users Group - cutting his estranged business partners Briggi Bard and Corsi Mousehold off from a potential repeat customer list which Serpentine, Bard, and Mousehold had jointly built up in happier days as part of the SexGen business. Mr. Serpentine told the Herald monday evening that around 80% of the former SexGen user group memebers had moved to an Eros user group for which Mousehold and Bard do not have adminstrative access

Even more surprising was the possibility of a Serpentine alliance with Nexxus Ambassador - a furry community leader and potential rival of Mousehold’s -- a possible case of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"? We cannot discount the possibility that this was purely a social call, but Mr. Serpentine told the Herald he was talking to Ambassador when we inquired about the decimation of the SexGen User's Group.

"Raid? isn't that what anonymous does to our sims?" - Werewolffan98 Baran

Alynna Vixen: We have a war on our hands.
Alynna Vixen: OK ladies and furfags.
Almira Leopold: ???
WOLF Brimm: what kind of war
Minareth Irata: This better be serious. >.>
Atheron Alter: War?
Alynna Vixen: http://foo.secondlifeherald.com/slh/2008/09/sl-sexbeds-at-r.html?cid=131654396#comments
Atheron Alter: The point is if you get the entire community involved LL will disreguard it completely
Atheron Alter: Drop it
Squirrel Wood: which is best ended right now. :p
Raven Welesa: atheron...corsi got suspended because of stroker
Minareth Irata: This stuff bores me to death, really...
Almira Leopold: This is stuff that should be discussed in private IM guys.
WOLF Brimm: jesus

Alynna Vixen: if you all aren't willing to stand up for Corsi...
Alynna Vixen: what the fuck are you willing to stand up for?
Alynna Vixen: she makes all this possible.
WOLF Brimm: i am goddamn it
WOLF Brimm: lets kick this guys ass
Almira Leopold: Freaking out in group chat is going to do nothing positive. Instead of getting the furries nest all riled up write letters or talk to individuals who can make positive change.
Minareth Irata: What exactly, went wrong? Can't really stand up for Corsi if I have no idea what happend...
Alynna Vixen: man its a long story... maybe I should formulate a better plan of attack than to be pissed.

WOLF Brimm: we all must stand up for corsi
Alynna Vixen: but this guy will be made to pay for what he's done.
Minareth Irata: Wait, attack?
Almira Leopold: Sounds like a better idea Alynna.
Kajet Seifert: what Minareth said, and I fail to understand how drama bombing people will help Corsi
Minareth Irata: Alynna, maybe an idea to make a short story in a note and send it as a notice?
Almira Leopold: Think before doing something drastic
Werewolffan98 Baran: what happened to corsi? sorry my computer crashed last night.
Raven Welesa: stroker lied and said corsi was violating trademark with sexgen

WOLF Brimm: well lets raid this ass hole
Raven Welesa: i have a better suggestion
Minareth Irata: Raid? Guys, you really aren't planning an attack are you? That's.....Pointless...
Raven Welesa: why doesn't someone go to his store and find anything of corsi's that he is using and AR him for using another's stuff without permission
Roonai Karu: Let's raid Ironforge! Dibs on Bronze Beard!

Werewolffan98 Baran: Raid? isn't that what anonymous does to our sims?
Almira Leopold: Heres a better idea. Stop freaking out like rats on acid and actually find out what can be done to HELP corsi.
Squirrel Wood: go and do something stupid and it will just make things worse.
Raven Welesa: almira, i just told you, if stroker is using any of corsi's animations, after he accused her of trademark infringment then we got him for lying to the lindens
Alynna Vixen goes afk, to formulate an actual plan of attack that will be effective..

Minareth Irata: No offence Allyna, and I can understand your anger, but I think it was a bad idea to share this news with the community already...
Almira Leopold: I was speaking to the rest of the group at large.
Minareth Irata: Alynna*
Minareth Irata: And, what the hell you mean with an attack, Alynna?
Raven Welesa: everyone lets just drop this conversation
Almira Leopold: Plan of attack is an action phrase meaning plan for course of action..
Almira Leopold: I agree with raven.

Raven Welesa: i want to hit this bastard too and i have ideas especially after he acused stroker of putting furry pedophilia into the beds
Raven Welesa: but here is not the place
WOLF Brimm: lets all attack this ass with SPAMM
Werewolffan98 Baran: how about nukes?

Raven Welesa: i am closing the im window now, please follow suit everyone
Almira Leopold: I'm Done. If anyone needs a dose of rationality, Ciao
WOLF Brimm: HOW ABOUT BULLETS
Dogmeat Clawtooth: How would that help convince the Lindens that Corsi is the good guy here?
Exavier Lupindo: I just got in on this can osmone explain the situation?
Exavier Lupindo: just no wolf...
Atheron Alter: I'm sorry wolf, keep this up i'll eject you from the land and the group
Exavier Lupindo: No

Werewolffan98 Baran: there are various nukes on the SLX
WOLF Brimm: sorry
Atheron Alter: We don't need any kind of war hawking in this chat, if anything. It'll support the belief that furries are drama driven delinquents and make the case even more lost.
WOLF Brimm: ok
WOLF Brimm: war is the only thing i know in sl and rl
Alynna Vixen: SL Herald is drama
Atheron Alter: Legal issues (yes this is a legal issue) need to be met with maturity, even if the circumstances are beyond normal.

Sloz: The growing secrecy

Browsing back over some previous stories we’ve run, it reinforced to me again just how more secretive Linden Lab have become in the past year or so.

There’s a growing list of communication mechanisms that have gone by the wayside:
1. The monthly population metrics are no longer supplied in anywhere near the detail they used to. [...]

Second Life Herald: The Great Goon Holocaust of 2006 Anniversary Observed

by Pixeleen Mistral, Subrealism Affairs desk

Outside Hurfzateer HQ in the W-hat’s sim “what”, a solemn vigil was held Friday September 19th, to observe the second anniversary of the great goon holocaust of 2006.

A small crowd gathered near the grave sites, and took a few moments from running “talk like a pirate day” animations to consider the fate of the Voted 5 group and Satyr sim - for on this day in 2006, the entire sim of Satyr was repossessed by Linden Lab and all objects in Satyr were deleted.

At the same time time Satyr was wiped clean, Philip Linden told the metaverse that a grid crasher crackdown had taken place and some 60 accounts were perma-banned. Friends and relatives of the notorious Voted 6 group could only identify the names of 22 accounts that had gone missing - not surprising given king Philip’s tendency to perhaps accidentally overstate figures on occasion.

Immediately after the destruction of Satyr, the W-hat goons vowed to "Never Forget" and erected a memorial to the fallen which said, "This Memorial stands so that we may remember those that lost their accounts, of the innocent furs and humans alike that were lost to us".

Of course, 2006 was in many ways a simpler time, as Gene Replacement passed time by using the mega-prims he had recently invented for some skywriting over Satyr.

V5 - gone but not forgotten

Still, there was a sense that change was in the air, and W-Hat goons worried that 4chan /b/tards might get bored with Habbo Hotel and migrate to Second Life. The mass pool closings that followed in the wake of the /b/ immigrants to Second Life only underscore the prophetic words of Dano Plisskin who warned me two years ago, “never underestimate the power of retard in large numbers”. Ironically, the destruction of Satyr was followed 9 months later by the destruction of Woodbury sim as history repeated itself.

And so on this solemn day, I considered the fate of those who anger the game gods and feel the force of the ban hammer - they may perish, but their friends and alt accounts will never forget.
